Welcome to Saving the Sunshine State

Saving the Sunshine State is a non-profit organization that is dedicated to addressing the housing crisis in Florida by providing low-cost room rentals to families and individuals in need. Our clients include veterans, individuals with disabilities, victims of domestic violence, people impacted by hurricanes, and low-income families or individuals. To achieve this, we purchase homes and then upgrade them to meet the necessary standards for safe and comfortable living. Our goal is to provide affordable and stable housing options that can help break the cycle of poverty and homelessness in Florida.

Once the homes have been upgraded, we then offer low-cost rooms to those in need, providing them with a safe and stable place to live. Our goal is to provide not just a roof over their heads, but also access to resources and support services, such as financial counseling, job training, medical services, and educational programs, to help them build better lives for themselves and their families.

Angela Wilson - CEO

Angela Wilson - CEO

Angela is the CEO of Saving the Sunshine State and a partnering non-profit and has personal experience with the services the organizations have been providing since 2015. She moved into a room managed by a partner organization of Saving the Sunshine State in 2019.

Angela began her career in retail management. She married and became a mother of two boys. The marriage became unhealthy, including domestic abuse, and ultimately ended in divorce. A few years later, Hurricane Irma hit. With her home flooded, and the roof destroyed, her ex-mother-in-law called Child Protective Services and successfully took custody of her children.

Angela reached out to local non-profits and was provided a room and began reestablishing her life. Her goal was to regain custody of her children and rebuild her career. When she wasn’t working, she dedicated her time to doing volunteer work with the local non-profit that provided her with housing.  In early 2020 at the onset of the COVID pandemic, the position of CEO became available, and she was voted in as CEO.  Shortly thereafter Angela and two other board members founded Saving the Sunshine State Inc. Over the next year, Angela helped Saving the Sunshine State Inc establish 2 additional emergency housing facilities and she regained custody of her two boys whom all live a safe and happy life reunited.

The non-profit assistance was critical to her regaining her children and her life. Saving the Sunshine State Inc provided more than a room, it provided support and encouragement to her and all its clients, so anyone can turn their life around. To provide the most funding for the community, all board members volunteer their time and forego a salary or wage.

Angela says, “Saving the Sunshine State helped me and allowed me to help others through the difficulties of life, difficulties I have gone through. The result was better than I could have possibly imagined. Everyone needs help sometimes and I want to be able to help those in need to the best of my abilities.”

Testimonials

I grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. surrounded by crime, mental illness, and poverty. From age 16 to 23, I was addicted to opiates and spent most of my life in a cycle of incarceration, borderline homelessness, and bouncing from job to job. I came to Florida for a fresh start. Saving the Sunshine State was able to provide me with an affordable place to live, even though I had a previous eviction and ZERO credit. They taught me about credit and how to open a bank account. They helped me file my taxes for the first time at 24 years old, and gave me what I needed to learn about being an actual adult. I now have been sober for years, have a real job, 2 cars, and a steady place I can call my home, a meaningful life, and a successful lifestyle.

Resident

I grew up in the foster system never knowing my biological parents. I thought the foster system was hard until I turned 18 and was sent out to pretty much fend for myself with no skills in the real world. saving the Sunshine State Inc helped me build my credit and create a budget so I could qualify for a house of my own.
